A former Chelsea legend has questioned the club’s decision to sign Moises Caicedo when they could have bought in the ‘more experienced’ Sofyan Amrabat at a knockdown price instead.

The Blues splashed a record £115m on bringing Caicedo to Stamford Bridge last month, pipping Liverpool to the Ecuadorian’s signature.

However, Chelsea fans have been far from impressed with the 21-year-old’s early showings for the club, with the defensive midfielder at fault for Nottingham Forest’s goal in the Blues 1-0 defeat on Saturday.

Now one former Chelsea star has hit out on the club’s decision to bring in Caicedo and has earmarked a player who would have been more suitable.

Frank Leboeuf, who spent six seasons in west London from 1996-2001, claims the Blues should have signed Sofyan Amrabat instead of breaking the bank to bring in Caicedo.

Speaking to ESPN, the World Cup winner said: ‘When I see those kind of players going to Manchester, I often talk about Chelsea trying to find those experienced players in the middle of the park. Why didn’t you think about that guy?

‘He would have been the perfect player to pair with Enzo Fernandez. Yeah, they got Moises Caicedo, but for over £100m! I see that guy going to United on loan, he can then be bought for [a total of] £30m. That would have been a bargain.

‘He was amazing for Morocco at the last World Cup. He has proven his talent. Why don’t Chelsea think of these guys? He’s an experienced player. Why don’t Chelsea think of these kinds of players?’

Manchester United had been linked with Moroccan midfielder Amrabat all summer and finally managed to land the 27-year-old on deadline day.

Leboeuf played for Chelsea between 1996 and 2001 and won the World Cup with France

He will join the Red Devils on a season-long loan from Fiorentina, costing United an £8m loan fee, with the option to buy for £21m next summer.

Chelsea meanwhile have concentrated on recruiting younger players, spending another £400m this summer of new talent, which included Cole Palmer, Nicolas Jackson, Romeo Lavia as well as the record sum spent on Caicedo.

Their summer spending has seen Todd Boehly’s outlay topple the £1bn mark in just three transfer windows since taking charge of the club last year.
