Germany have sacked Hansi Flick and the decision could soon have repercussions for Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp has long been linked with managing his country and rumours will only resurface once the vacancy is open again.

Flick began his role as Germany boss in August 2021, replacing the long-serving Joachim Low. He was unbeaten in his first 10 matches in charge.

However, he oversaw a miserable World Cup in Qatar where his side were dumped out at the group stage. Germany suffered a damaging loss to Japan in their first game of the tournament and it is the same opposition who has seen Flick off.

Japan beat Germany 4-1 in a friendly at the Volkswagen Arena in Wolfsburg on Saturday. Two late goals from the visitors rounded off a third successive defeat for Die Mannschaft.

Germany host Euro 2024 next year so are only playing friendlies as they don’t need to qualify. They suffered defeats to Poland and Colombia in June and are now winless in their last five internationals.

He was relieved from his duties on Sunday afternoon.

Klopp will likely be one of the names in discussion to replace Flick. Former Norway striker Jan Aage Fjortoft has already thrown the Liverpool boss’ name into the hat but doubts whether he would want the job now or even share it with his current role.

Fjortoft wrote on X: “The Germans’ dream is Klopp. Probably tell him he can do BOTH Liverpool and German. But guess he will turn that down.”

Klopp was asked about the possibility of managing Germany as recently as June. However, he insisted he would be loyal to Liverpool, with his contract at Anfield not expiring until 2026.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. The problem that stands in the way of the whole thing is my loyalty.

“I can’t just leave Liverpool now and say I’ll take over Germany for a short time. That doesn’t work and the request isn’t even there.

“If I’m supposed to do that [manage Germany] at some point, then I have to be available and I’m not currently. I have a responsibility towards the club.

“Basically, it’s an interesting job. But I don’t know yet whether I’ll do something completely different after I leave Liverpool. I want to keep my options open.”

But it remains to be seen how Klopp will react if he is formally approached for the job. Liverpool will be hoping he does remain loyal and sees out his final three seasons at the club before moving on to a new venture.
