A 17-year-old footballer described as an ‘exemplary player and football lover’ has died due to complications linked to meningitis.<\/p>\n
Naomi Mendoza was taken to hospital in the Canary Islands after collapsing last month. She spent several weeks in a coma before passing away last week.<\/p>\n
Mendoza represented the Canary Islands\u00a0Under-17 women’s national team and played her club football for\u00a0Guiniguada, who have now paid tribute to their former goalkeeper.\u00a0<\/p>\n
‘We will always keep your smile. Your improvement. Your desire to live,’ the club said on Instagram with a video of Mendoza.<\/p>\n
They added: ‘You will shine very bright. You will always be eternal Nao. Always.’<\/p>\n

Mendoza played in goal for the Canary Islands Under 17s national side and was remembered by her former club for her ‘smile and improvement’<\/p>\n
The club also announced they would cancel all training for the day as a mark of respect for Mendoza.<\/p>\n
Union Viera, another club in the area, said the news had ‘shocked all of Canary Islands football.’<\/p>\n
La Liga side Las Palmas offered their ‘sincere condolences’ to her family and friends.<\/p>\n
Numerous fans commented to share their thoughts with the family and willed Mendoza to ‘Rest in Peace.’<\/p>\n
CN8, a local media outlet, said of the goalkeeper: ‘Canary football mourns the loss of a young player, who had a great future ahead. Exemplary player, football lover and a great partner.’<\/p>\n
