Sir Nick Faldo has sent a brutal reminder to long-time rival Greg Norman about his collapse at the 1996 Masters. Faldo won three green jackets at Augusta during his impressive career, with his last coming at the expense of Norman 27 years ago.

Norman looked set to finally end his wait for a Masters title at the 1996 event, after leading the opening major championship of the year across the opening 54 holes. The Australian headed into the final round with a comfortable six-shot lead ahead of the chasing pack, which was led by Faldo.

The pair joined each other in the final group on Sunday, and things did not go to plan for leader Norman. The former world No. 1 surrendered his advantage after carding a nightmare six-over-par 78 across his final 18 holes.

This allowed the waiting Faldo to swoop in, more than taking advantage of Norman’s struggles by shooting a five-under 67 to put his arms into the famous green jacket for the third time. Despite his win coming nearly three decades ago, Faldo has been quick to remind his rival about their Sunday Augusta battle, poking fun fun at Norman’s famed nickname ‘The Shark’.

Don’t miss…

In a video posted to his shared Twitter account with his wife Lindsay, Faldo was seen sporting a ‘Jaws’ t-shirt whilst being asked “When was the last time” he had gone shark hunting? Taking a swipe at Norman he replied: “1996. April ’96 was my last shark hunt.”

Not done with his joke there, the Englishman was then asked ‘how it went’, to which responded with a smile: “It went well. I didn’t need a bigger boat if you know what I mean. My boat was big enough.”

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. Following its controversial formation last summer, the LIV Tour has faced a whole host of criticism.

And one of its – and Norman’s – biggest critics has been Faldo, who slammed his 1996 Masters rival for tainting his golfing legacy earlier this year. He told Sky Sports: “He [Norman] was a great golfer. He really was a charismatic, exciting golfer and he’s absolutely wrecked all of that.”
