Former Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick gave a very blunt one-word reply when asked if he fancied the Germany job.

Hansi Flick was fired as Germany’s coach on Sunday in the wake of a miserable 4-1 friendly defeat to Japan and a dreadful run of form by the Euro 2024 hosts.

Attention has turned to Flick’s successor, with Rangnick – who is currently the coach of Austria – one of the prominent names in the frame.

The 65-year-old took the Austria job after his unsuccessful interim tenure at Old Trafford in 2021-22, following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking and Erik ten Hag’s arrival.

When asked by reporters if he would consider taking charge of Germany, Rangnick simply replied: ‘No’.

After being pressed for his reasons, he added: ‘I decided 14 months ago to work here as team boss and to prepare the team so that we qualify for the Euros and play a good role there.

‘Everything else is not an issue for me.’

Rangnick has so far won six, drawn three and lost four of his 13 matches as Austria coach.

They are currently second behind Belgium in Euro qualifying group F and face a crucial encounter away to third-placed Sweden on Tuesday night having been held to a 1-1 home draw by Moldova last week.

Reports on Monday said the German Football Association will speak to Julian Nagelsmann and Matthias Sammer about succeeding Flick.

Nagelsmann, who parted ways with Bayern Munich back in March, is currently the favourite to get the job after Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp ruled himself out of the running.

Germany legend Sammer has also worked at Bayern as sporting director and is currently working part-time as an adviser for Borussia Dortmund.
