Harry Maguire’s mother has fired back at ‘negative and abusive comments’ aimed at her son, after the defender came under scrutiny after England’s win over Scotland.

The Three Lions triumphed 3-1 against Steve Clarke’s side on Tuesday night, with Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane all notching for the visitors.

The hosts managed to fire back through an own goal by Maguire, which came 22 minutes after he was substituted into the match at half-time.

The under-fire defender was on the receiving end of a number of criticisms, from both fans in the stadium and pundits watching on, which England boss Gareth Southgate was quick to refute.

And now, Southgate isn’t the only one who has spoken out against the abusive comments, with Maguire’s mother now getting involved in the debate.

In a post on her Instagram story, Zoe Maguire wrote: ‘As a mum seeing the level of negative and abusive comments in which my son is receiving from some fans, pundits and the media is disgraceful and totally unacceptable to any walk of life never mind someone who works his socks off for club and country.

‘I was there in the stand as usual, it’s not acceptable what’s been created, over nothing. I understand that in the football world there are ups and downs, positives and negatives but what Harry receives has gone far beyond “football”.

‘For me seeing him go through what he’s going through is not ok. I would hate to have to see any other parents or players go through this in the future, especially the young boys and girls breaking through the ranks today.

‘Harry has a massive heart and it’s a good job he’s mentally strong and can handle it as others may not be able too. I wish this sort of abuse on nobody!’

Maguire came off the bench in Glasgow after goals by Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham put the visitors in control.

The Manchester United defender’s own goal gave a second-best Scotland hope before Kane eventually sealed victory late on.

Maguire scored an own goal and was targeted by the Scotland fans during Tuesday night’s friendly win for England

The travelling England fans responded to the Scotland fans’ targeting of Maguire’s every touch by cheering his contributions and singing his name.

After the game, Gareth Southgate launched a robust defence of England’s ‘tower of strength’ and blasted the pundit criticism he has suffered as ‘an absolute joke’.

‘He was exceptional for us at the weekend [in the 1-1 draw with Ukraine]. The reaction tonight is a consequence of idiots really from our side who have created that environment,’ the England manager said.

‘So what I think was brilliant tonight was our fans who were here recognised that they’re going to protect their own. We should be doing that.

Gareth Southgate hit out at pundits for over criticism of Maguire following the match

‘We’re creating a problem for our own player. Some of the articles that were written, some of the comments that were made, were an absolute joke.

‘He’s been a tower of strength for us through one of the most successful periods of English football and the response tonight – I understand Scottish fans, they’re having some fun – but it’s created by our own side, it’s ridiculous.’

Continuing his stout defence of Maguire in the post-match press conference, Southgate added: ‘From a Scotland fans’ point of view I get it and I’ve got absolutely no complaints with what they did.

‘It’s a consequence of ridiculous treatment of him for a long period of time, frankly. I think our fans recognised, ‘Okay, there might be a bit of heat from our own supporters but we’re not going to have it from others getting into him’. But it’s a joke.
