Dwight Yorke skipped a transfer meeting with Barcelona and signed for Manchester United instead after an all-night drinking session, according to Lee Sharpe.

Yorke was hot property in the 1990s due to a prolific spell with Aston Villa, with some of the biggest clubs in Europe chasing his signature, including United and Barca. But during one off-season, a boozy holiday in Magaluf was just as much of a priority for the notorious party animal.

Yorke was with the Villa squad when he bumped into former United man Lee Sharpe, who knew all about playing under Sir Alex Ferguson, and began picking his brain about life at Old Trafford.

“He was talking about Fergie and what it’s like at United. It got to six in the morning and I’m like ‘Yorkey, I've got to go, I’m done’.”

Yorke then shocked Sharpe with his transfer revelation. Sharpe added: “He then said ‘thanks for the info, I didn’t tell you but I chatted to Fergie last week and I’m supposed to be meeting Barcelona at nine o’clock in the morning. I think I’ll give that a miss and sign for United’.

It proved to be a wise decision though, as Yorke went on to win the Treble with United in 1999, plus various other trophies before leaving for Blackburn in 2002. He later played for Birmingham, Sydney FC and Sunderland. Yorke had a brief spell in management with A-League side Macarthur FC.
