Mercedes driver George Russell saw his Singapore Grand Prix take a cruel turn on Sunday as he crashed into the barrier on the final lap.<\/p>\n
The 25-year-old was pushing hard for a podium finish after a late pit stop and had made it to third place on the final lap.<\/p>\n
He had been within a second of Norris, but ended up in the barriers on the second sector of his final lap while pushing for an overtake.<\/p>\n
His teammate Lewis Hamilton made it past the crashed car into third, while Russell was unable to finish the race.<\/p>\n
Russell could be heard shouting ‘no!’ on the radio as his race came to a premature end.<\/p>\n

George Russell’s Singapore Grand Prix ended in misery as he crashed into the wall on the final lap<\/p>\n

Russell touched the barrier on the right in the braking zone before sliding off the track and into retirement, as he chased down the leaders on much fresher medium tyres<\/p>\n

Carlos Sainz went on to win the race after starting on pole and leading every lap<\/p>\n

Norris held on to second place despite Hamilton’s late assault, while Max Verstappen failed to make it 11 wins in a row and finished fifth.<\/p>\n
The Dutchman started in 11th and failed to pit with most other drivers during a yellow flag after 20 laps.<\/p>\n
It gave him track position but his pace suffered, and it was only when he finally did pit with 20 laps remaining that Verstappen began to come through the field.<\/p>\n
Formula One will return next weekend for the Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka.\u00a0<\/p>\n
