Gary Neville reckoned VAR "guessed" to rule out Arsenal's opening goal against Everton for offside.

The Gunners thought they'd taken the lead inside the opening 20 minutes at Goodison Park when Fabio Vieira played Gabriel Martinelli in behind and he found the bottom corner of Jordan Pickford's net.

But Eddie Nketiah had been offside in the build-up, coming back from behind the Toffees' defensive line after Gabriel's pass had deflected off Beto and to him. Neville was convinced that wasn't the case as he watched the replays.

The Sky Sports pundit claimed: "Well he’s not offside, Everton aren’t going to get that decision their way. They’re a little bit high up and Martinelli punishes them."

After VAR overturned the goal, Neville added: "Well even I am a little confused, I thought he looked well behind the line there. Did they not have a better camera angle than that?

"That one is a strange one for me, I thought it looked like it came off an Everton player. With so many cameras in the ground, I thought there would be a better angle than the one they just used for VAR.

"I know Erik ten Hag has complained about that in the past but that’s a very strange one, I’m not sure. Mykolenko to me looks like he’s behind Nketiah and there’s a little bit of guesswork on that blue line for me I think."

Beto's deflection was deemed to be unintentional which was why Nketiah was ruled as offside. Neville felt the lines "didn't feel right", but they left him with egg on his face.
