Manchester United are hopeful of having Raphael Varane and Mason Mount available for Saturday’s Premier League clash against Burnley.

Manchester United news, exclusives and analysis

The pair missed Wednesday’s Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich with Erik ten Hag without 12 members of his first-team squad for that trip to the Allianz Arena.

Mount, who joined United from Chelsea this summer, picked up a knock in the second game of the season away to Tottenham.

Varane meanwhile was subbed off in the second half against Nottingham Forest on 26 August.

Both were not deemed fit enough to make the trip to Germany but ESPN report there is growing optimism they will be available Saturday night at Turf Moor providing they come through Friday’s finale training session unscathed.

United remain without Luke Shaw, Aaron-Wan Bissaka, Amad Diallo and Tom Heaton with midfielder Sofyan Amrabat and Kobbie Mainoo also recovering from knocks. The midfield duo returned to individual training this week but it remains to be seen whether they will be involved this weekend.

Harry Maguire is another who missed Champions League action midweek after picking up an injury in training.

With Antony and Jadon Sancho also unavailable, United have missed three of their regular back four in recent weeks with both Shaw and Wan-Bissaka still some way off a return.

Shaw has not featured since the defeat to Tottenham with concerns he will not be available until just before November’s international break.

United announced this week Wan-Bissaka will miss ‘several weeks’ after picking up a hamstring problem after coming off the bench at Brighton. But reports suggest the former Crystal Palace star is also looking at a return date in November.

United have lost four of their last five games, conceding 14 goals in that run but captain Bruno Fernandes insists injuries can be no excuse for such form.

‘We don’t have to think about the injured players,’ Fernandes said after Wednesday’s 4-3 defeat.

‘We have enough players to give a response on the pitch. Obviously, we want everyone fit, as many players as possible, and we know we have some important players injured, but that’s not an excuse not to win games.’
