Manchester City are reportedly close to confirming the signing of Manchester United starlet Harrison Parker as part of an academy double swoop that also sees West Ham’s Divine Mukasa join. Rivals United had worked hard in their attempts to keep the 17-year-old at Old Trafford and went to great lengths to prevent him moving across the city, but he is now on the verge of joining Pep Guardiola’s youth revolution.

City’s ambitious academy beat four top clubs to the signing of Parker, as Fabrizio Romano has claimed that City are close to announcing a deal for the young centre-back. This is despite United offering him a record deal for a youth player which was turned down.

Last month, United confirmed that they had signed highly-rated twins Jack and Tyler Fletcher from City’s academy. The 16-year-old midfielders moved for a whopping £1.25million and are the sons of former Red Devil Darren Fletcher, who now works as the club’s technical director but had no influence during negotiations.

Parker joined United’s academy two years ago from Arsenal but they appear powerless to keep hold of the talent, who turned 17 on Friday, September 22 and is now eligible to sign a first professional contract.

More info

Don’t miss…

The Manchester Evening News claimed that United felt that City’s push to sign Parker came as a direct result of the Red Devils poaching the Fletcher twins, while they expect to receive a significant fee for the defender if an agreement is reached between the two clubs or via a tribunal.

But Parker has a tough challenge ahead to compete for a spot in Guardiola’s backline, as City forked out £77.5m to sign RB Leipzig centre-back Josko Gvardiol in the summer. He joined to compete with the likes of Ruben Dias, John Stones, Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji to further strengthen a treble-winning defence.

City though will feel that they have strengthened their academy while weakening their rivals’ in one move by signing Parker, having seen their twin starlets poached by United last month.
