Fans have been left gobsmacked after James Maddison managed to play on despite suffering what appeared to be a shocking injury.

The Tottenham midfielder’s first North London Derby was an eventful affair. He almost cost his side a goal when, at 1-0 to Arsenal, he lost the ball to Gabriel Jesus, who blazed over the bar from close range.

Maddison then began to exert a positive influence on the game, setting up both Tottenham goals for Son Heung-min as the visitors secured a deserved 2-2 draw against their bitter rivals. Maddison didn’t finish the match, although he incredibly managed to play on for a period despite, at first glance, appearing to suffer a serious knee injury.

Fans were left wincing when a replay showed the knee buckle as his studs got caught in the turf. With Maddison lying on the pitch in pain, it looked as if he would leave the game.

However, he not only got back to his feet, he remarkably played on for a few minutes, even if he was in discomfort. Maddison was eventually withdrawn by Ange Postecoglou in the 78th minute as the game petered out into a draw.

Speaking himself, Maddison, who was named player of the match, said he didn’t know how serious the injury was.

He said: "I just had a little moment where I jolted my knee a little bit, and you don’t ever want to be playing in a derby where you’re not totally 100%. I thought the lads were brilliant, we showed our quality and 2-2 is probably a fair result."
