Police are not treating the death of Sheffield United midfielder Maddy Cusack as suspicious.

Cusack passed away aged 27 last week with the Blades paying an emotional tribute ahead of their game against Newcastle this weekend. She had made over 100 appearances for the club while also working as a marketing executive.

Derbyshire Police have now confirmed her death is not being viewed as suspicious. A statement added: “We were called to a property in Lady Lea Road, Horsley, just after 6.35pm on Wednesday 20 September. A woman, in her 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her family are aware and are being supported by specialist officers.”

Cusack came through the academy at Nottingham Forest before joining Aston Villa in 2012. She moved to the Steel City five years later, where she cemented her reputation as a likeable figure after adding her marketing role in 2021.

"This is heartbreaking news for everyone at Bramall Lane," said chief executive officer Stephen Bettis. "Maddy had a unique position of being part of a number of teams at Sheffield United and was popular with everyone that she came into contact with.
