Everton hero Duncan Ferguson is set to land a new job in management – despite his disastrous spell at Forest Green.

The former Newcastle and Rangers striker was appointed by the eco club last season and was charged with keeping them in League One following a wretched start to the season. However, Ferguson managed just one win in 18 games as Forest Green crashed out of the third tier.

Ferguson looked set to remain in charge for their League Two campaign, only to leave the club in July at the start of pre-season training. He was initially replaced by Hannah Dingley, the club’s academy chief, on an interim basis before David Horseman was appointed permanently.

Ferguson has now returned to work north of the border with Inverness Caledonian Thistle, who are rock-bottom of the Scottish Championship with one point from six games. Ferguson, who is set to be unveiled today (Tuesday), replaces the sacked Billy Dodds.

Addressing Ferguson’s Forest Green departure, chairman Dale Vince said at the time: "It’d been a privilege to work with Dunc these last few months and this was a very difficult decision to make. I’m grateful to Dunc for joining us in such difficult circumstances and for all of his hard work at the club.

"But I feel this is overall the right decision for everyone and I wish Dunc well in his next coaching role. We are parting as friends. You can’t ask for much more than that."

Forest Green have done little better in Ferguson’s absence though. They sit third-bottom of the fourth tier with seven points from their first nine games.
