Scunthorpe United’s crisis thickens after their Twitter social media account was seemingly deleted in the wake of controversial owner David Hilton’s banning of critical supporters.

The Iron are a club in turmoil both on and off the pitch after the club who played Championship football as recently as the 2010/11 season, now find themselves playing in the 6th tier following back-to-back relegations.

National League North side Scunthorpe looked as though they were about to turn a corner after Hilton bought the club from previous unpopular owner Peter Swann in January this year and cleared their mounting six figure tax bill. But the club still remain in serious trouble with their growing debt piling the pressure on Hilton who has seemingly cracked.

Hilton’s reputation long before he became owner of Scunthorpe has been scrutinised after The Athletic reported earlier this month that they believe Hilton was previously sentenced to two years in prison for 15 counts of fraud by false representation under a different name, David Anderson.

After arriving as the club’s saviour, Hilton is seemingly plunging the club further into the abyss after one frustrated fan received an email from the club’s supporter liaison officer on Monday (September 25) morning which read: "Good morning, the club would like to inform you of a banning order being placed on you with immediate effect. Kind regards."

The Iron’s fans and football lovers alike have criticised the club on social media, which has seen Hilton seemingly order the club to delete it’s Twitter and Facebook page, leaving fans in shock and sadness at the current state of affairs.

One account tweeted: “Scunthorpe United have now deleted their Twitter account What is going on with #Iron? Heart goes out to their fans – praying it gets sorted before it’s too late.”

A second commented: “Bonkers what's going on at that club. Really feel for the fans but I can't see a way out for them right now. Hope it gets better,” with a third adding: “It appears the owner can’t bear to hear people’s opinions, despite saying he is staying clear of social media he can’t help himself to read any negativity and react aggressively… explains why the page has gone down, he has helped save the club just hope he can now get a sale.”

Hilton announced last week that he was putting the club up for sale just eight months after buying it, potentially giving Scunthorpe and their fans hope of a brighter future.
