The 44th Ryder Cup is in full swing amid the warm surroundings of the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club near Rome. It is the first time that the prestigious team matchplay tournament has been held on Italian soil.

The USA arrived as the current holders after enjoying a record 19-9 victory at Whistling Straits two years ago. The bookies make Zach Johnson’s side the slight favourites in Italy, even though no American team has won a Ryder Cup on European soil in the past 30 years.

Should the 17-inch tall gold trophy return on the plane to America on Monday, it will undoubtedly have been earned, but where is the next Ryder Cup set to take place in two years’ time?

The 2025 Ryder Cup will be held at Bethpage Black in New York. It will be only the second time that the competition has been staged in New York since Oak Hill Country Club hosted the 1995 event in which the European team won 14.5-13.5.

Bethpage Black is situated on Long Island and is a notoriously difficult golf course. Since the early 1980s, there has been a sign situated at the first tee that warns golfers as such. The sign reads “WARNING The Black Course Is An Extremely Difficult Course Which We Recommend Only For Highly Skilled Golfers”.

The Black Course hosted the US Open in 2002 and 2009, with Tiger Woods and Lucas Glover earning Major wins respectively, before Brooks Koepka won the PGA Championship on the same course in 2019 by breaking the course record with a 63 on the first day.

Koeopka would shoot 65 on the Friday to complete his first two rounds in 128, two shots better than the previous lowest score in Major history, shared by Nick Faldo, Brandt Snedeker, Martin Kaymer, Jordan Spieth and Gary Woodland.

More info

Europe’s last win on American soil came in 2012 when Ian Poulter inspired a miraculous comeback from four points down to clinch a 14.5-13.5 victory in what became known as the ‘Miracle of Medinah’. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest comebacks in sporting history.

Since then, the Ryder Cup has been staged twice in the States – first at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Minnesota where the USA enjoyed a 17-11 win, before the Europeans, who had reversed their fortunes in Paris two years later, suffered that humiliating mauling at Whistling Straits in 2021.

But before attention can turn to Bethpage’s notorious Black Course, the greatest show in golf will have its day in Rome and with the pain of Wisconsin still in their minds, the European team will be out for retribution for sure.
