Newcastle fans were treated to a historic evening as their side dismantled PSG 4-1 in their Champions League group stage clash on Wednesday night.

The Magpies took all three points after goals from Miguel Almiron, Dan Burn, Sean Longstaff and Fabian Schar at St James’ Park.

The French champions did look to mount a comeback when Lucas Hernández struck in the second-half but, in the end, they came up second best against Eddie Howe’s side.

Here, Mail Sport’s Craig Hope takes a look at the best moments from before, after and during the match at St James’ Park.

Miguel Almiron kick-started Newcastle’s rampant win over PSG with the first goal of the game

The Magpies stormed to a 4-1 victory over the French champions in the Champions League tie

Your browser does not support iframes.

For once, the DJ unplugged his decks in the 10 minutes before kick-off and allowed the home crowd to make the noise. With St James’ long since full, he did not have to worry about the void being filled. And so we enjoyed that rarest of things in UK football stadiums – fans in chorus with the teams still in the dressing-room. It was a magnificent sound that set the tone for a raucous night.

Miguel Almiron became the first Newcastle player since Alan Shearer 20 years ago to score a Champions League goal, and the Toon legend was here to see it. In fact, he had spent the day with his former team-mate Rob Lee – himself scorer of a hat-trick on the club’s return to Europe after a 17-year absence against Antwerp in 1994 – and the pair enjoyed their first beer at 230pm. No wonder St James’ was bouncing!

Almiron became the first Newcastle player since Alan Shearer 20 years ago with his effort

Striker Alexander Isak played on despite picking up a nasty cut above his eye in the first-half

Speaking of Shearer, Newcastle’s Alexander Isak channelled his inner Big Al when picking up a nasty wound above his eye. It looked for a moment like it could force him off – and that would have been interesting, with no striker on the bench – but the Swede returned with a mammoth bandage around his brow, much like Shearer famously did before scoring here against Sunderland in 2002.

PSG’S Ultras marched en masse through Newcastle city centre two hours before kick-off, but things turned ugly near the stadium. Witnesses say they began spitting at Newcastle fans, and a section responded by confronting the Parisians. It led to punches and traffic cones being thrown before police intervened to disperse the rival groups. There was unsavoury footage of one PSG fan appearing to aim a punch at a female Newcastle supporter.

It’s All Kicking Off is an exciting new podcast from Mail Sport that promises a different take on Premier League football.

It is available on MailOnline, Mail+, YouTube, Apple Music and Spotify.

Your browser does not support iframes.

FANS IN GREAT VOICE
