Max Verstappen has opened the door to competing in the 24 Hours of Le Mans at some point in his career, although he has insisted that he will be taking part in the race to win, not just to make up the numbers.

The Dutchman has the chance to make history this weekend as well with the 2023 F1 World Championship on the line if he can accumulate three points across the sprint race and Grand Prix at the Lusail International Circuit.

However, as a pure racing fanatic, Verstappen has previously expressed his desire to take part in races outside of the world of F1, once his time at the top table comes to an end.

Addressing the possibility: “I will definitely do Le Mans, but it needs to also come together, I don’t want to rock up there and just be filling up the field, if I enter I want to have a good preparation, I want to be able to win. If it’s possible, maybe with the RB17? Who knows.”

The Silverstone-based outfit announced earlier this week that they will be entering the World Endurance Championship with their now-iconic Valkyrie Hypercar for the 2025 season onwards.

“But it’s great for the sport that they’re going there with the Valkyrie, it’s an amazing car and a V12 engine is going to sound incredible,” Verstappen continued. “I will definitely be watching, and maybe Fernando will be driving the car anyways. It’s going to be great!”

More F1… We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. More info

The 26-year-old wouldn’t be the first F1 driver to make the switch to endurance racing after ending his F1 career. Former Alfa Romeo driver Antonio Giovinazzi became a Le Mans winner earlier this year, and the likes of Brendan Hartley, Paul Di Resta and Jean-Eric Vergne are all currently on the WEC grid.

As a Monaco Grand Prix winner with a desire to race at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, this has naturally led to Verstappen being a potential candidate for the Triple Crown of Motorsport. If he did claim victory at Le Mans then only the Indy 500 would stand in his way.

However, Verstappen currently has no plans to take to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway anytime soon. Speaking about the possibility of entering, he said: “No, I respect them a lot. I have some friends of mine doing it, but not at the moment, no.”
