Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen has admitted he is not the right type of player for Erik ten Hag. The Dane has struggled for game time this season and has given an insight as to why.

Eriksen was one of Ten Hag’s first signings at United in the summer of 2022. He joined on a free transfer following his six-month spell at Brentford.

He made 44 appearances in all competitions in his debut campaign despite an ankle injury ruling him out for over two months. Starts have been harder to come by this term, with Eriksen named in just three of Ten Hag’s XIs in the first eight Premier League matches.

United signed Mason Mount and Sofyan Amrabat in the summer to increase competition in midfield. In an honest exchange, Eriksen has conceded he is not the type of midfielder Ten Hag currently desires.

We’ve been hit hard by injuries in defence.

“We’ve simply conceded too many goals. I was sick last week, but I feel fine. I don’t have any injuries.

“My body feels good and of course I want to play every game. But if you’ve seen the games yourself, you might also realise that (Ten Hag) plays with a different type of player than me.”

Eriksen has been joined at United by fellow Dane Rasmus Hojlund. The striker has three goals in his first eight appearances for the Red Devils after signing for a fee of up to £72million.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. He added: “I think Rasmus has been a wise purchase.

“He’s a guy who fits in with the squad, fits in with the style of play, understands the coach’s ideas, and he’s a good guy who works hard. He could score a few more goals (laughs).

“He’s very mature in his approach to things. Of course, sometimes he says some things that are… youth stuff, but he has his head in the right place.

“We’ve been out to eat, he’s been over at my house, and we see each other every day at the club. He doesn’t need to be put in place. I have given him my advice, and he has chosen to live close to the stadium and the training facility, so he has listened there.”
