Newcastle have been backed to make their biggest transfer statement yet by raiding Arsenal and Manchester City in January. John Barnes admits he would love to see both Emile Smith Rowe and Kalvin Phillips move to St James’ Park in the winter window.

Smith Rowe and Phillips are both reported to be on Newcastle’s radar. The duo have continued to struggle for game time at their respective clubs.

Arsenal haven’t started Smith Rowe in a Premier League match since May 2022 while Phillips has started just twice in the top flight since joining from Leeds 18 months ago. Newcastle are set to be in the market for a central midfielder ahead of the impending ban for Sandro Tonali.

Smith Rowe, meanwhile, would provide further depth in attack ahead of what Eddie Howe will be hoping is a run in the Champions League knockout stages. Barnes says both players would be good acquisitions to Howe’s squad.

He told mybettingsites.co.uk: “Phillips and Smith Rowe are young and English. I love it when young English players go to clubs who have high aspirations.

“They both are very good players. Obviously, it’s not worked out for Phillips at Manchester City but that doesn’t mean he’s not a good player otherwise Man City wouldn’t have bought him.

“As to whether he feels he wants to fight for his place at Man City but of course, both of them would be very good acquisitions for Newcastle as was Harvey Barnes. I think both of them would be good signings for Newcastle.”

Former winger Barnes has also given his verdict on Anthony Gordon’s start to the season. Gordon has three goals and two assists in the Premier League but Barnes believes there is more to come from the ex-Everton star.
