Manchester United have reportedly launched a desperate bid to bring David de Gea back to Old Trafford just a few months after letting him leave as a free agent. De Gea saw his 12-year run as United’s No 1 choice come to an abrupt end this summer when contract talks broke down.

The Spaniard was offered reduced terms to stay at United, but he was unwilling to accept the new contract. He was eventually replaced by Andre Onana, who has come under scrutiny in his first few months at United.

But United face bigger problems in the New Year over concerns that Onana could end up choosing to play for Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations. According to The Sun, United are looking to combat this by making a sensational bid to bring De Gea back to the club.

Altay Bayindir is currently United’s back-up choice for Onana, but he’s yet to make his debut for his new club. If Onana chooses to go to the Africa Cup of Nations then he’s at risk of missing up to eight matches for United.

It’s claimed the Red Devils are prepared to swallow humble pie by making an approach to re-sign De Gea. The Spaniard hasn’t signed for a new club since leaving United in the summer, but he has been spotted in Manchester in recent weeks.

He met up with United captain Bruno Fernandes following the club’s win over Sheffield United last week. The report states that De Gea would be offered a short-term deal.
