Todd Boehly could take the total Chelsea have spent on central midfielders since his arrival in London to over £400m should speculation that the Blues are trying to sign Barcelona youngster Gavi prove to be true.

According to reports in Spain, the Catalan giants are in need of a big-money sale to get themselves back into an economically stable position once again. Newspaper Sport says that midfielders Gavi and Pedri are top of the list to be sold off because they have received “the most offers”.

The outlet has named Chelsea as one of the clubs to have shown an interest in 19-year-old Gavi who is believed to have an £87m (€100m) price tag on his head.

The Spanish champions are reluctant to let one of the most important young stars leave for the Premier League but with books to balance could be left with no choice.

There are no such problems for Boehly’s Chelsea however, with the American billionaire buying players like sweets since he purchased the west London club in May 2022. The 50-year-old businessman has spent a staggering £899.55m on 27 new recruits, signing two goalkeepers, six defenders, nine midfielders and 10 forwards in that time.

In central midfield alone, the Blues have parted company with £336.5m on just six players. The costly list includes a club record £115m transfer fee for former Brighton & Hove Albion star Moises Caicedo and £107m on Argentina’s World Cup-winner Enzo Fernandez.

Romeo Lavia was a summer signing from relegated Southampton for £58m, fending off interest from Liverpool, but the 19-year-old hasn’t even made an appearance for his new club yet.

Lesley Ugochukwu was also brought in from French side Rennes during the same transfer window for £23.5m, while £20m was spent on Aston Villa’s Carney Chukwuemeka in the summer of 2022 while, Andrey Santos moved over from Brazilian side Vasco da Gama for £13m in January of this year.
