Newcastle have mounting problems after Dortmund defeat | Football Digest

Newcastle could get a bargain Sandro Tonali replacement in January by scouring the market for players whose contracts are ending next summer. Clubs are often looking to offload soon-to-be free agents in the winter in a bid to receive funds for players who will otherwise leave for nothing a few months later.

The Magpies might hope to replace Tonali in the winter despite the Italian returning from his ban next August. Express Sport looks at four midfielders who could be signed on the cheap in January.

Youssouf Fofana

At 24, Fofana might be the best possible replacement for Tonali out of next summer’s free agents. The France international is coming towards the end of his contract at Monaco and might be destined for the Premier League.

Several top-flight clubs have been linked with the dynamic talent, but Newcastle could be the main attraction. A cut-price deal in January could be sought in January to ensure Monaco receive a fee for the player.

Tomas Soucek

A box-to-box midfielder who has rekindled his best form for West Ham this season, Soucek could be an option for Newcastle if their owners wish to weaken a Premier League rival. Soucek has been excellent for the Hammers this season, thriving despite the departure of former partner Declan Rice.

The Czechia international has scored four goals this season and would be the perfect replacement for Tonali. Given that his contract expires next summer, Newcastle might be able to negotiate a cut-price deal.
