Manchester United turned in another sorry Old Trafford performance on Wednesday as they were thumped 3-0 by a second-string Newcastle side who ended their Carabao Cup defence with a whimper.

Erik ten Hag had also opted to ring the changes after their derby day humbling at the hands of Manchester City but any hopes of bouncing back were dispelled by the ruthless Magpies.

First-half goals from Miguel Almiron and Lewis Hall sent Eddie Howe’s side on their way before Joe Willock completed the drubbing with a wonderful third on the hour.

The home side and their manager, who was subjected to ‘sacked in the morning chants’ on at least two occasions, will grab most of the headlines. But Newcastle’s much-changed roster produced a brilliant performance commensurate with the club’s upward trajectory.

Here, Mail Sport takes you through who thrilled on the night and who had an evening to forget in Manchester.

Lewis Hall grabbed his first senior goal with a wonderful volley from the edge of the area

The defending champions were dumped out of the Carabao Cup on a sorry Old Trafford night

Manchester United (4-2-3-1)

Andre Onana 6

Might have closed the angle on Almiron sooner for the first goal but was largely blameless on the night.

Diogo Dalot 4

Hooked at half-time after a disappointing 45 minutes that saw both Newcastle goals come from down his side. Almiron caused the Portuguese defender all sorts of problems.

Victor Lindelof 5

No glaring mishaps but failed to deal with Gordon’s movement on the front line.

Harry Maguire 6

Pretty anonymous for most of the game. Passed the ball well in possession but his header fell to Hall for the Magpies second.

Sergio Reguilon 6

Showed promise very early in the game with some smart link up with Garnacho but faded and was nowhere to be found for the opener as Livramento charged down United’s left-flank.

Dalot and Reguilon made up half of United’s defence that struggled against Newcastle

Hannibal Mejbri was fortunate not to receive a second yellow card for a foul on Emil Krafth

Your browser does not support iframes.

Hannibal Mejbri 6

Lucky not to have been sent off in the first-half but was the only visible display of passion and aggression from the United team.

Casemiro 4.5

Poor return to the starting line-up after injury after he was booked, ran all over and then substituted at the break.

Antony 6

Performed well in flashes but decision-making let him down at crucial moments.

Mason Mount 5

Barely influenced the game in the attacking phases and could do nothing off the ball as the away side dominated the centre of the park.

Alejandro Garnacho 5

Started well but faded. Was another player who showed energy and a bit of spark but did nothing of note after the first 15 minutes.

Mason Mount struggled to influence the game in attack and failed to half Newcastle’s advance

Anthony Martial turned in another dismal performance and barely contributed to the play

Anthony Martial 4

Hardly anything to speak of. Got his toe on the end of a cross early in the second-half which went out for a corner but that was about it.

Erik ten Hag 4

His attempt to give fringe players a chance to impress backfired horribly. Endured chants of ‘sacked in the morning’ from opposition fans and boos from his own supporters.

Subs:

Dalot for Wan-Bissaka 6 46

Mejbri for Fernandes 6 65

Casemiro for Amrabat 6 46

Garnacho for Rashford 6 65

Martial for Hojlund 6 64

Newcastle (4-3-3)

Martin Dubravka 6

Played well on his return to Old Trafford but had very little to do.

Tino Livramento 7

Created the first goal with a wonderful run before producing a perfect pass to set up Almiron. Defended brilliantly to keep Garnacho quiet.

Emil Krafth 7

A top performance on his return to the starting line-up. Alongside Dummet, restricted Man United to half chances.

Paul Dummett 7

A commanding display at the heart of defence alongside Krafth. Barely put a foot wrong as the away side kept a deserved clean sheet.

Matt Targett 5

Lasted a little over a minute before being forced off with a hamstring injury.

Joe Willock grabbed a third goal on the hour for Newcastle to end faint United hopes of a comeback

Miguel Almiron (front) and Anthony Gordon (back) terrorised the United defence all evening

Lewis Hall 8

Scored a special goal to double Newcastle’s advantage and grab his maiden goal in senior football. Defended brilliantly in the second period to keep Anthony quiet.

Sean Longstaff 7.5

Led from the front as skipper on his 150th appearance. Contributed to the commanding midfield that bullied the home side. Nearly scored an absolute screamer in the final minutes.

Joe Willock 8

A wonderful performance from a player who continues to surprise. Marked his return to fitness with a stunning goal after bossing the midfield alongside Longstaff.

Matt Ritchie 7

Confident and composed display from a seasoned veteran. Delivered a few dangerous crosses into the box during the first half and formed part of Newcastle’s resilient defensive structure.

Joelinton 7.5

Outran, outfought and outclassed United’s midfielders. Played a crucial role in Newcastle’s third goal.

Anthony Gordon 8

Too hot to handle for United’s defence. Showed his intelligence in a false nine role, drifting out wide and knitting together the play. Had a hand in Newcastle’s second with a delightful flick that opened up the move.

Eddie Howe masterminded a brilliant away victory for his side on their quest to return to the Carabao Cup final this season

Eddie Howe 8

Trust in his much-changed roster was rewarded. Managed the game well as United threatened to score with the game at 2-0.

Subs:

Targett for Almiron 8 88

Scored the opener and bullied Dalot, forcing his change at the break. Relentless in his running and terrorised the United defence all night.

Hall for Burn 6 75

Willock for Guimaraes 6 64

Ritchie for Trippier 6 75

Gordon for Wilson 6 64

Referee Robert Jones 6

Should have dismissed Mejbri in the first half but otherwise managed the game well and cautioned where appropriate.

It’s All Kicking Off is an exciting new podcast from Mail Sport that promises a different take on Premier League football.

It is available on MailOnline, Mail+, YouTube, Apple Music and Spotify.

Your browser does not support iframes.
