Alan Shearer has revealed that Chelsea messaged him in response to his criticism over Nicolas Jackson’s performances in a Blues shirt.

After Chelsea’s disappointing 2-0 defeat to Brentford at the end of October, Shearer was quick to comment on the forward’s underwhelming performances.

During a Match of the Day broadcast, Shearer claimed that there was a ‘complete lack of movement’ from the former Villarreal forward.

However, in the weeks have that have followed, Jackson has managed to score four goals in three matches – making Shearer’s comments seem somewhat unfair.

Now, the former Newcastle United striker has revealed that the club reached out to him regarding the comments but claims they agreed that it wasn’t ‘over the top’.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer said: ‘I mean the game just had everything from start to finish. It was entertaining and there were so many impressive performances, particularly from the guys in a Chelsea shirt.

‘Jackson I agree, I was critical of his lack of movement a few weeks ago. I got a text from Chelsea to say that they didn’t think it was over the top and that they have been working on one or two things in and around that.

‘He was a lot better today and full of confidence after what happened earlier in the week and that showed today.

‘It was a great game for everyone to watch. I think for the fans that is important to see those small steps. The coaching, we all know what Poch is like, he is a very good coach and he is the right man.

‘They are definitely improving and they seem to be understanding what he wants.’

Since Shearer’s original comments, Jackson scored a hat-trick during their 4-1 win over Tottenham and a crucial goal during their thrilling 4-4 draw with Man City.

At the end of October, however, Jackson’s luck in front of goal was in complete contrast and led to Shearer lambasting his performances for the Blues.

Jackson scored a crucial goal during Chelsea’s 4-4 draw with Manchester City on Sunday

He said: ‘To be more prolific you have to get yourself into scoring positions. There was a complete lack of movement from him today. Sometimes you have to make the run for the defender and for yourself.

‘He looks very raw and at times unsure what to do. He’s just waiting for something to happen, you have to do it yourself sometimes. You’ve got to work, you’ve got to make defenders work, you’ve got to try to pull them around.

‘Goalscorers don’t hang around at the edge of the box like he does. He’s got to accept that the ball comes in, it’s his job to get on the end of it. They were never, ever going to score today with that. It looks as if he needs a lot of help in that position.’

Jackson’s recent goal haul has proved crucial to his early start to life in West London, having initially struggled after making the £32million move from Villarreal.

It’s All Kicking Off is an exciting new podcast from Mail Sport that promises a different take on Premier League football.

It is available on MailOnline, Mail+, YouTube, Apple Music and Spotify.

Your browser does not support iframes.

IT’S ALL KICKING OFF!
