Arsenal could be left furious by Brazil if national team head coach Fernando Diniz starts Gabriel Jesus in their upcoming match against Argentina on Wednesday. The forward has been out of action for the Gunners in recent weeks due to injury, but that has not stopped the Selecao from calling him up for games against Colombia and Argentina.

Jesus did not travel with the squad to Colombia for their 2-1 defeat as he stayed behind for treatment on a hamstring injury he picked up against Sevilla in the Champions League. Mikel Arteta declared that he would spend “weeks” out injured but less than a month later he could return to action against rivals Argentina.

Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte have claimed that Vinicius Jr will miss the crunch World Cup qualifier, and Jesus is the favourite to step in alongside Arsenal team-mate Gabriel Martinelli and Real Madrid star Rodrygo.

Diniz has already stated that he is prepared to play Jesus if he passes their medical tests. “I trust the player and he being here, I take satisfaction,” he said after calling the striker up to his squad. “He didn’t come here without planning. He said he was feeling good and already doing certain things.

“When I talked to him he had two more weeks left. We thought it interesting to risk bringing him here. He is in good condition. We are doing things with great care. As soon as he arrived, he had a new MRI. We are treating him very carefully.

“If he does not have a condition, he will be available against Argentina. For Gabriel, it was very important for him to come here and he will return to Arsenal even better than when he got here.”
