Everton deducted 10 points in record-breaking punishment

An independent commission’s decision to dock 10 Premier League points from Everton is ‘fair’, Express Sport readers have concluded. A small majority of football fans believe that the Toffees deserved their punishment for breaking the league’s financial rules.

A landmark decision to hand down the brutal punishment to Everton was made on Friday. It is only the third time a Premier League club has had points deducted.

Everton, who will appeal the decision, were found guilty of one breach of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability regulations. The charge concerns a £372million loss posted by the club between 2018 and 2021.

In a poll of Express Sport readers, 51 per cent of 8,196 voters insisted that the punishment was ‘fair’. Deducting 10 points from Everton means Sean Dyche’s side are 19th on a measly four points, although only two points from safety. A majority of 74 per cent of voters believe Dyche will guide Everton to safety.

Fellow Premier League outfit Manchester City face 115 charges of breaching the top-flight’s financial rules. Sixty-four per cent believe City will face a punishment if they are found guilty. Meanwhile, sixty-nine per cent say that the Premier League is right to be handing out harsh penalties for breaches of their financial rules.

Everton are preparing an appeal over the outcome of the investigation. The Toffees have seven days from publication of the decision to make their protestations.

A club statement read: “Everton Football Club is both shocked and disappointed by the ruling of the Premier League’s Commission. The club believes that the commission has imposed a wholly disproportionate and unjust sporting sanction.
