Mauricio Pochettino previews Newcastle clash

Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino will pay a heavy price for falling foul of his own disciplinary rules as he prepares to sit out of their clash against Newcastle on Saturday. Pochettino has prepared his side for a tough trip to the North East to face Eddie Howe’s side at St James’ Park, but he won’t be in the dugout as he serves a one-game touchline ban after receiving a caution for his behaviour towards Anthony Taylor.

The Argentinian raged at referee Taylor in the aftermath of their 4-4 draw with Manchester City 12 days ago and earned himself a yellow card – his third caution of the season. Under recently introduced FA rules, managers are handed a one-game touchline ban if they pick up three yellow cards before the turn of the New Year.

Pochettino already made his frustrations clear with his striker Nicolas Jackson after the Senegalese got himself suspended for one match earlier this season. The 22-year-old’s first four yellow cards were all given for dissent or protesting the referee’s decisions, and the 51-year-old boss sent a warning to him not to land himself in any further trouble.

The next game, however, Jackson’s name was taken by the referee for timewasting in the 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa and he was ruled out of their clash against Fulham.

Instead of receiving a fine from the club for five yellows in six games, Jackson was punished by being forced to take on extra running sessions at the training ground – a scenario that left the forward baffled.

“One day I was running I didn’t know why. They just called me out to run. It was laps, really hard, the intensity, then I was lying down when I finished,” he said.

“The coach spoke to me and told me to be careful. When you show a card, you get a yellow card. I’m planning to change that.”

When asked about the motive behind making Jackson run, Pochettino said: “He needed to run!”
