A handful of Galatasaray players furiously squared off with Alejandro Garnacho after the latter’s opening goal for Manchester United on Wednesday night, but the incident was not picked up by TV cameras. The Red Devils made a fast start to proceedings in Istanbul and were duly rewarded with an early lead when Garnacho smashed the ball home after just 11 minutes.

Bruno Fernandes fed Garnacho with a cute pass before the 19-year-old took a touch and fired into the top corner with his left foot from close range. He went on to celebrate by taunting the home fans with a ‘calm down’ gesture as those in the stands responded with loud boos and whistles.

Garnacho held up a hand after a few seconds to apologise to the irate Galatasaray fans but it was not enough for Fernando Muslera, who was enraged by the teenage winger’s antics. He responded angrily by sprinting 40 yards up the pitch in order to confront Garnacho and was joined by several of his team-mates.

A few missiles rained down from the stands as the players squared off, with the referee going on to speak to both captains prior to the restart. Things quickly calmed down between the two teams after the incident, which was not shown on TV but referred to by TNT Sports commentator Darren Fletcher.

Garnacho, meanwhile, was later singled out for high praise by Rio Ferdinand after scoring his second goal for United in just four days.

“Garnacho is the real deal, there’s no doubt in my mind,” said Ferdinand as he ran the rule over Garnacho’s latest strike. “He is the real deal. This kid, ice in his veins. A spectacular goal at the weekend and the importance of this one to silence the crowd in an intimidating environment.”

The Argentina international is currently enjoying a rich vein of form after scoring one of the Premier League’s greatest ever goals against Everton on Sunday. His perfectly-executed bicycle kick in the third minute has been widely replayed over and over again, with Red Devils legend Gary Neville among those to have been left astounded by the sheer quality of the strike.

“I felt it was something I’ve not seen before,” Neville told Sky Sports. “The thing that struck me straight away was the fact he had to move away, he comes in and comes back out, moves his feet quickly and then throws himself in the air.

“I played football at a professional level for a long time, I can’t do that, not just the overhead kick but even getting in the air to be able to make contact with the ball because I’d think I’d break my neck.”
