Ben Stokes underwent successful surgery on his left knee on Wednesday as he bids to be fit for England’s tour of India in the new year.

England’s Test captain posted on social media that he had been ‘in and out’ of London’s Cromwell Hospital, with the renowned knee specialist Andy Williams carrying out the operation.

Williams is well known to Stokes, having advised him not to undergo the knife 10 years ago but manage discomfort in the joint.

However, things came to a head last summer when Stokes was unable to bowl a ball in the final three matches of the Ashes.

Stokes has spent the majority of his career keeping his troublesome knee strong. Indeed, he was at Headingley doing fitness work earlier this month, a matter of hours after returning from the World Cup.

The England Test captain underwent successful surgery on his left knee on Wednesday

As reported by Mail Sport, the 32-year-old left that Leeds fitness session on crutches, having twisted his ankle while jumping, but that damage will not jeopardise him making the first Test of five against India on January 25.

Stokes said that the operation would be a ‘clean out’, and was necessary for him to be able to return to performing in his familiar role as an all-rounder – although when he is able to do so will depend on his recovery over the next couple of months.
