Police have confirmed 46 arrests were made on Thursday night as Legia Warsaw fans clashed with officers – one of which was 'set on fire' – outside of Villa Park.

The Polish side were in town to face off against Aston Villa in the Europa Conference League. But much to their disappointment, they were on the end of a 2-1 defeat to Unai Emery's Villa, who defeated Legia thanks to goals from Moussa Diaby and Alex Moreno.

However, the real talking point surrounding the game was the tension and violence that unfolded prior to kick-off, with Polish supporters having launched missiles at Villa fans and police before the game.

So violent were the scenes outside Villa Park, a police officer was even snapped 'on fire' after being hit by a flare from the Legia fans. And now it has been confirmed by Dudley Police that 46 individuals were arrested following the violence.

On Friday morning, Dudley Police tweeted: "We've now got 46 people in custody following last night's violence involving away fans outside Villa Park. Officers faced 90 minutes of sustained violence, and four were injured. We're proud of our officers, and thank #AVFC fans for their support."

They added: "Of the suspects, 41 of those were arrested for violent disorder, four for possession of a knife/offensive weapon, and four for assaulting emergency workers.

"All of those arrested are away fans, and we'll be working hard to charge and remand those suspects where we can today." Due to the troubles prior to kick-off, the game against Villa began without Legia fans inside Villa Park, leading to supporters of the former to chant about their lack of support.

The Polish side had also been vocal about Villa's ticket allocation for their fans before the game, stating: "Aston Villa FC is refusing to allocate tickets to away fans in accordance with UEFA regulations for a UEFA Europa Conference League match.

They added: "Due to the actions taken by Aston Villa FC as the host club, Legia Warszawa informs that its official delegation, management board and the club's owner and president Dariusz Mioduski will not be present at the hosts' stadium during the next UEFA Europa Conference League match.

"Instead of relieving potential pre-match tensions, Aston Villa FC's restrictive measures as the host club unnecessarily exacerbate the atmosphere. In our opinion, such measures are counterproductive and baseless."
