Chris Sutton has slammed Sheffield United striker Oli McBurnie after he was sent off for two bookable offences.

As the Blades took on Burnley in a six-pointer at the bottom of the Premier League, they knew that a win was crucial to ease the pressure on Paul Heckingbottom.

However, the game ended in a 5-0 defeat for the newly promoted side in what could prove to be the manager’s last in charge.

At 2-0 down, McBurnie picked up a yellow card for an alleged elbow before being sent off for a second bookable offence, as his elbow made contact with a Burnley player once again, just nine minutes later.

This led to Sutton, who was speaking on BBC MOTD, to criticise the forward.

Chris Sutton believes that the alleged elbows were intentional from the Scotsman

When asked about the second yellow card, Sutton said: ‘I think it was wreckless. I think he threw his arm. It’s not one of those where you’re using it to elevate yourself. I think there’s extra in that.’

The former Premier League striker continued to reveal that he believes McBurnie could have been sent off for the first challenge, which saw him given a yellow card.

‘He should have got the red for the first one,’ Sutton continued. ‘That’s two reds really. He’s got two yellows but the first one, that’s a red card. It’s violent conduct. The second one is just as bad.

‘What an idiot. His team are 2-0 down, they’re struggling and the manager’s under pressure and he goes and does that. Lost his head.’

Sheffield United sit 19th in the Premier League after the defeat and will be without McBurnie for their next match as Liverpool visit in midweek.

It remains to be seen as to what the future holds for Heckingbottom, with his position looking more uncertain than ever.
