Ivan Toney has fanned the flames of a potential move to Arsenal with a hastily-deleted social media post after Declan Rice's late winner against Luton.

The Brentford striker has been heavily linked with a switch to the Emirates Stadium and fans think a January move could be on after he uploaded what appeared to be a snap of himself celebrating Rice's goal. He captioned the photo: "@DeclanRice. What a game [heart eyes emoji]," before swiftly wiping it from his page.

Minutes later the rumour mill was whirring, with some fans suggesting the post was a ploy to increase speculation around an imminent Arsenal approach. One X user wrote: "Definitely done that on purpose."

"We see what you're doing there, Ivan," wrote another. One Bees fan fumed: "Twerking for Arsenal. Don’t ever want him in a Brentford top again," while another raged: "F*** off Toney. Hope we sell him to Chelsea."

Some, however, saw it differently. One person wrote: "Why is everyone overreacting to this? Rice is his England team-mate." Another said: "Too many getting worked up by this. If you're upset by this I suggest you grow up."

Toney is serving the last few weeks of his eight month ban for betting offences, which ends on January 16, 2024. Arsenal and Chelsea, both of whom are in the market for a centre forward, are mulling over a mid-season move for him, though it's understood Brentford are staunchly planning to hold onto the player until the summer.

The 27-year-old hasn't kicked a ball since May, but the Bees are nonetheless expected to demand around £60million when they eventually decide to sell him. Toney scored 20 Premier League goals last season, a tally bettered only by Erling Haaland and Harry Kane.

Arsenal's 4-3 win over Luton last night was their fourth on the bounce and moved them five points clear at the top of the table – though their lead will be reduced to two points if Liverpool beat Sheffield United on Thursday. Meanwhile Toney's Brentford are 11th in the league, but will jump into the top half with a win over Brighton tonight.
