“It was a special night” | Mikel Arteta reviews Arsenal dramatic win at Luton

A Luton Town insider was reportedly taken aback by the extent of Arsenal’s celebrations after their win at Kenilworth Road earlier this month. Declan Rice’s last-gasp header sealed all three points for the Gunners, and the on-pitch celebrations were followed up by further euphoria in the away dressing room.

Arsenal were pushed all the way by newly-promoted Luton, who temporarily went 3-2 up through Ross Barkley in the second half. But goals from Kai Havertz and Rice rescued Mikel Arteta’s Premier League title-chasers in last week’s gripping encounter.

Rice’s header proved to be virtually the last action of the game, nestling in the far corner to spark wild celebrations from the travelling fans, who witnessed Manchester City close the gap and ultimately overtake their side in last campaign’s title race.

According to The Daily Mail, Arsenal players and staff made plenty of noise once they migrated back to the dressing room, with one insider saying: “You’d have thought they’d won the league, not nicked a win at little Luton.”

The Gunners’ hard work was undone four days later when they fell short against Aston Villa. The West Midlands outfit picked up their second major scalp within a week, having also toppled City by the same 1-0 scoreline.

John McGinn’s early strike earned a victory which no doubt tasted extra sweet for Unai Emery against his former side. It also left Arsenal one point behind table-toppers Liverpool, and only one ahead of high-flying Villa.
