Manchester United legend Dwight Yorke has revealed that he didn’t even receive a response after applying to become Sunderland manager last year. The Black Cats are on the hunt for their next head coach after sacking Tony Mowbray, but Yorke isn’t hopeful of being in the mix to take the reins at his former stomping ground.

The 52-year-old retired from professional football in 2009, ending a distinguished playing career with three years at the Stadium of Light. Since hanging up his boots, Yorke has interviewed for jobs with Sutton United and Perth Glory, and he also claims to have applied for the manager’s role at another of his old clubs, Aston Villa.

His big managerial break came with Australian side Macarthur FC, but the stint Down Under lasted just over six months. With the Sunderland job now back up for grabs, Yorke has discussed the difficulties he continues to face while trying to find a respectable position in management.

“I have tried applying for the Sunderland job before and I’d love to have that opportunity, but I’m not sure if they’d give me a chance,” he told Alt Index. “I applied before Tony Mowbray joined, but I didn’t get an answer or acknowledgement.

“It’s a bit of a slap in the face to not even hear back. It seems the same faces are linked with the job. It can make you a bit despondent, but if they were to ask me to put a CV in, it could be worth a chance.

“Learning on the job doesn’t seem to exist anymore, though, and it seems as if you have to have an abundance of experience to be considered for the job and defy the odds.
