Yves Bissouma won't be working over the Christmas break this year.

The Mali midfielder was essential to Tottenham's plans when in the team earlier this term, but that availability has been cut down by several suspensions. And the 27-year-old is set for another spell on the sidelines after earning a second red card of the Premier League campaign at Nottingham Forest on Friday.

Bissouma was dismissed after an awkward challenge saw his studs make contact with the shin of Forest midfielder Ryan Yates. And the seemingly avoidable nature of the clash left some supporters of the impression he had better places to be this Yuletide season.

"Bissouma with the classic “can’t be a***d playing at Christmas” tackle," wrote one viewer with a pair of laughing emojis. "Been years since I’ve seen one of them."

Another fan said the playmaker "clearly has plans at Christmas which do not involve football." And a third posted: "Lovely Christmas break for Bissouma."

And it's not as if Ange Postecoglou can afford to lose him, with the likes of James Maddison and Rodrigo Bentancur on Tottenham's list of long-term absentees. Brennan Johnson could also be a concern for the Australian coach after a head injury forced him off after just half an hour at City Ground.

Thankfully for the north Londoners, Bissouma's 70th-minute dismissal wasn't enough to prevent them winning 2-0 on the road. That was thanks to goals from Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski either side of half-time.

Bissouma was previously sent off for two yellow cards in quick succession at Luton Town back in October. He sat out one league fixture as a result before serving another one-match ban for accumulation of cards the following month.

Following this latest lashing out, it now appears all but certain Bissouma will miss the upcoming league fixtures against Everton (H), Brighton (A) and Bournemouth (H), meaning his 2023 may have reached an abrupt end. The next match he'll be available for looks likely to be the FA Cup clash against Burnley on January 5, but he'll have to be on his best behaviour from here on.
