Sky Sports pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher both felt that Diogo Dalot’s red card against Liverpool was “harsh”. The Portuguese defender was handed two yellow cards at once for dissent, as referee Michael Oliver deemed it worthy of two bookable offences – a Premier League first.

Neville and Carragher were both puzzled by the decision to send Dalot for an early bath in the final minutes of stoppage time. The former Manchester United defender asked: “What does dissent twice even mean? How do you break up one rant into two bookings?”

Carragher then replied: “Has he given it for dissent twice? That seems incredibly harsh for me,” before Neville then added: “Well… is that even a red card?”

The 10-men of United were able to hold on and claim an impressive point away to Liverpool, having kept the likes of Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez at bay despite an injury crisis at the back.

Though Erik ten Hag will now have to make do without another key player, as Dalot is set to serve a suspension for the upcoming trip to West Ham on Saturday.

Though Dalot was visibly frustrated on the pitch, as he protested a throw-in that went against him and complained enough to the referee that it was determined that he deserved two yellow cards.
