Real Madrid are interested in bringing Raphael Varane back to the club in the January transfer window after David Alaba’s anterior cruciate ligament injury, according to reports. However, Erik ten Hag may fight for the 30-year-old defender to stay at Manchester United despite his contract expiring in June.

Alaba is expected to miss the remainder of the 2023/24 season after rupturing the ACL in his left knee in the first half of Real’s 4-1 win against Villarreal on Sunday.

The Austria international, 31, is also a major doubt for Euro 2024 in Germany next summer, and his long-term absence has sparked Real into action ahead of the New Year.

According to BILD, the La Liga giants’ search for a replacement has taken them to Old Trafford, where Varane’s future is uncertain.

Varane left Real for United in a £34million transfer two years ago, and there is an option to extend his current deal until 2025.

However, the German outlet claim that Real are interested in taking him back to the Santiago Bernabeu this winter so Carlo Ancelotti isn’t left short in defence.

Varane is free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with overseas clubs from January. But Real’s interest appears to be with an immediate switch in mind.
